How long is the road to mastery?

I celebrated my birthday a couple of weeks ago and it got me thinking about the 10,000 hours rule, described at length in Malcom Gladwell’s Outliers: How long would it take me to master a new skill if I started from scratch?

I made a quick (depressing) calculation and thought that other people might want to do this too.

Today, I’m launching the first version of my 10,000 Hours Calculator, a one-pager that will help people set goals for themselves.
